Facets of Motion plays with the idea of musical material being the way in which relationships – harmonic, motivic, and rhythmic – play out through time. Material for me is subject: it has a kind of life, an identity that only emerges through its motion and action, and interaction. The form of the piece flirts with sonata form. I like the drama of sonata form, the sense of tension that the formal-harmonic dialogue within the piece creates. I interact with this type of drama in my own work, setting up tensions, developing material constantly, allowing themes and motives to become superimposed and then again separate. Because development of material in this piece is most intense in the exposition and recapitulation, the development is actually the most static section of the piece, allowing the music to breathe before it dances forward again towards the end, which becomes a combination of slow and fast motion.
